AWAY FROM THERE

Away_FromThere.jpg

AWAY FROM THERE is an exhibition by fourteen artists, currently Sculpture students at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York, whose works diverge from physical, cultural, institutional, and ideological boundaries. Mapping personal and historical narratives as well as instances of loss that slip through the cracks of archives and memory.  Imitations of existing architectural features in the gallery such as pipes, are both mimicry and fakery that separate form from function, dyed wood shavings patterned across the floor allude to the alfombras de aserrin of Guatemala, harina pan (corn flour) absorbs unrefined oil seeping from a steel rod as a reference to Venezuelan oil industries. Sculptural forms and images work together to play havoc with the expected notions of beliefs, spaces, industries, and time.

Featuring works by Alva Mooses's Sculpture students at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York: Christien Vargas, Max Miller, Vinicius de Oliveira, Daniella Portillo, Kalle Wadzinski, Robert Dietz, Braden Hollis, Danny Polonsky, Simone Dunye, Ava Markle, India Armstrong, Mary Wichmann, Nicole Lindner, and Connor Fulton.
